KIA ORA/GREETINGS TO ALL PARENTS AND FRIENDS OF THE SCHOOL

Welcome back to term 3.  I hope that everyone managed to enjoy a break despite the constant rain!!  Earlier this week we sent home a letter about our health programme “Keeping Ourselves Safe”.  All teachers will be implementing this programme in their classrooms next week.  If you have any questions or concerns and can’t make the meeting tonight, please don’t hesitate to contact us.  Below is the link for further information.

UPDATE FROM SCHOOL COMMUNITY OFFICER

Hi Schools

Recently I attended a course which Netsafe presented at.  As usual they were informative and provided great information and offers of advice and support in regards digital safety with young people.

Below are links to their sites and information.

Kind regards,

Catherine Sell

School Community Officer

Here is the link to Netsafe’s Staying Safe Online Guide > https://www.netsafe.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Netsafes-Staying-Safe-Online-Quick-Reference-Guide.pdf.  It has a range of information about the different apps and features to be aware of.

Here’s the link for net-aware.  They have an easy-to-navigate reference area for parents, schools and students – you can type in the name of the app and it will direct you to more information about the app, how it is viewed by different groups (young people, parents) and also some tips for keeping safe online. > https://www.net-aware.org.uk/networks/?order=-popularity

One of your team members asked for key messages for parents.  Below is a list that we suggest schools start with, and is by no means exhaustive.

  1. It’s not about the technology – it’s about the behaviour.  Bullying is bullying whether online, or offline.
  2. Enable and support – this is more effective than controlling.  The effectiveness of filtering, firewalls and protective measures lessens the older young people get. (links to the point below)
  3. Help young people build skills – attitudes, values and strategies for dealing with risk etc.  They are not digital natives and need to be taught specific skills etc.
  4. Be the change you want to see – model appropriate behaviours and interactions online
  5. Stay connected – keep the technology visible, out of bedrooms and have open conversations
  6. Keep informed – understand what is happening for young people – what is important, what are current issues/ concerns.  Make informal conversations about ‘what’s on top’ a regular occurrence.
  7. Call Netsafe – anytime, whether is it is support around a specific incident or general advice

WET CONDITIONS

Our caretaker has been trying hard to maintain the grounds over winter but they are exceptionally wet.  Please pack some spare clothes for your child if possible and a reminder that gumboots with socks or slippers are a good choice over this period.

VIRTUES TERM 3

The VIRTUES Programme 2017

Term 3 ‘Tact’

The Virtues Programme promoted in our school provides teachers and students with a guide to identify and acknowledge universal virtues in each other.  Each term, one of the 52 virtues which the programme describes is randomly selected by a student which the whole school focuses on for the term.  The use of positive feedback in recognition of the virtue selected each term encourages a positive school climate where students take a growing responsibility for their own learning and gain confidence in expressing themselves.

During Term Three our focus will be on the virtue of Tact. The Virtue of Tact is knowing what to say and what is better left unsaid.  Tactfulness is when you think before you speak.  You are as careful with other’s feelings as you would like them to be with yours.

Each week students demonstrating Tact will be acknowledged by teachers or classmates, with a certificate which goes into a weekly draw for a small prize at our school assembly.

You may wish to talk about the virtue of TACT at home.  If you wish to discuss the Virtues Programme further, please contact Judy Belton, Virtues coordinator.

The next meeting will be held in the school staff room on Monday 31st July, starting at 7.00 pm. All welcome to attend.
